Theatre Preview: Crash @ Tobacco Factory Theatres

by Abi Hack

After its success at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2015 and its nomination for ‘Best New Play’ at the CATS Awards 2015, Traverse Theatre Company brings its psychological drama, Crash, to the Tobacco Factory Theatres this May.

Written by Andy Duffy and taking its direction from Emma Callander (Banksy: The Room in the Elephant), Crash delves into the world of high finance as it follows the narrative of a trader attempting to rebuild his life after facing financial crisis. Starring Jamie Michie (Game of Thrones) as its protagonist, this is a poetic insight into the brutal landscape of trading and the psychological impacts of the banker’s world.

Director Emma Callander comments,

“I am delighted that Andy Duffy's challenging and brilliant play Crash is touring the UK this spring. This deceptively simple piece of writing tells a chilling and important story about 21st century capitalism. Andy is a bold new voice in the Scottish playwriting culture and I'm so pleased we're able to share his work”.

Traverse Artistic Director Orla O’Loughlin says,

“It makes us immensely proud to have brought Crash on this journey. It came to the Traverse as an open submission and we have developed it through a Play, a Pie and a Pint, to a full production in our Festival programme, to now touring the UK. Our Traverse Associate Artist Emma Callander has worked closely with Andy Duffy to bring the play to the stage. The process perfectly represents the role the Traverse plays in finding and nurturing new writing and new writers”.
