Music Review: Limousines by Emily Breeze

by Tom Stockley

You may have read about the last time I crossed paths with Bristol’s “bonafide star” (Louder Than War) Emily Breeze. A few months later I have the pleasure of getting acquainted with her latest single, Limousines.

Three months after telling me: “…Right now I’m just trying to make f**king great pop songs”, it’s clear that this was no overstatement. Limousines is the soundtrack of Saturday nights gone wrong, a product of many Summers witnessing the kebab tragedies of late-night Bristol. “Pour yourself a drink, pull yourself together,” Breeze croons over sun-drenched melodies that one of our listeners likened to Haunt The Woods. As the song builds, it’s clear that Breeze and her band have constructed a rolling ballad, an homage to the hen do in the vein of Johnny Cash. This is an artist who has seen enough and is passing her wisdom on to the “…pissed up birds of paradise”.

A self-professed queen of tragedy, Emily has moved on from these days and we’re all the better for it. It’s fitting that the track’s producer (Stew Jackson) has worked with names like Nick Cave and Patti Smith – the spirits of whom Breeze channels throughout her work.

Emily Breeze is not just an artist, but a conductor and constructor of Goth-pop opera. For anyone embarking on a night out to forget, wailing ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ in Wetherspoons as WKD laced vomit drips down your top – Emily Breeze has some news for you, and it comes in the form of Limousines.
