Music: ‘I Know’ Single Release by Shovels & Rope
by Polly Hember
Shovels & Rope, the Americana-country-rock outfit, comprised of husband and wife Michael Trent and Cary-Ann Hearst, announced the release of what will be their third studio album: Little Seeds.
Following their title of Artist of the Year at the Americana Music 2013 Awards, also taking the Best Song award for their tender and tumultuous ‘Birmingham’, Shovels & Rope have premiered on David Letterman, released their second album Swimming Time, their compilation record Busted Jukebox Volume 1, toured relentlessly and became parents. A fast-paced, frantic and fierce three years that has produced some of the best country rock and classic folk song writing on the Americana scene today.
Alongside their announcement of Little Seeds, they have released the leading single ‘I Know’, available to listen below. Loud, full of their signature shovels and rope harmonies and fresh with strutting rocky guitar riffs, this single is playful and petty. Hearst discusses the song’s inspiration:
“No matter what career you’re in, you find petty jealousy […] This is a story about two bands that came up together and were friends, but in competition – you’re watching each other and feeling mutually jealous. It’s a silly expression of that”.
Like so much of their song-writing, this doesn’t shy away from the gritty reality of contemporary life. An upbeat, sizzling, head-banging single that is laced with playful malicious vertigo; this ‘I Know’ is fun, fierce, and a fantastic place to launch the rest of their new album from.
Little Seeds will be released on 7th October, here’s hoping they decide to take their Autumn Tour to the UK.
