Theatre Preview: The Love of the Nightingale @ Bristol Bierkeller
by Polly Hember
The Bristol Old Vic Young Company presents Timberlake Wertenbaker’s The Love of the Nightingale with a fierce, challenging and modern energy. The ancient myth is interrogated and played out with dance, dark humour and original rave music that attempts to confound conceptions concerning consent, gender, freedom of speech and sexuality. Following the tale of two sisters struggling to survive in a war-torn world dominated by men, the characters and the company ask powerful questions…
Directed by Miranda Cromwell (former Bristol Old Vic Young Company Director) and performed in The Bierkeller nightclub, this should be an anarchic and jarring performance that retells an old tale of patriarchy that simultaneously forces us to question our own way of life in our contemporary society.
“The Love of the Nightingale really does kick off an exciting new year for the Engagement team. The Bierkeller is the perfect venue for this charged and relevant tale, which is as original as it is modern. I’m sure the company will start the 2017 Studio Walkabout season in style with their vital interpretation.”
